Delaware Valley area: Jack Padalino led a search for eagles that produced 26 species including 7 bald eagles, common merganser, sharp-shinned hawk, 7 red-tailed hawks and a pileated woodpecker. (See our field trip link for info on upcoming trips.)

The Sussex County CBC had 86 species including common loon, double-crested cormorant, ruddy duck, wood duck, blue-winged teal, killdeer, lesser black-backed gull, eastern phoebe, gray catbird, brown thrasher, eastern towhee, savannah sparrow, rusty blackbird, pine warbler. A count-week long-tailed duck was noted on Culver Lake.

The Walnut Valley CBC had 86 species including ruffed grouse, lesser black-backed gull, long-eared owl, chipping sparrow, purple finch, cackling goose, female indigo bunting near the Portland Generating Station, and a Townsend's solitaire about 100 yards north of the Catfish Firetower on the Appalachian Trail south of Millbrook Rd.

Blairstown: Dennis Briede & Alan Boyd did a Big Stay on Dennis' deck facing the Kittatinny ridge. Forty-four species were noted including: 2 screech owls, 1 killdeer, 1 woodcock, 2 fox sparrows, 29 goldfinches, 3 pileated woodpeckers, 5 purple finches, 10 bluebirds, 2 myrtle warblers, 2 hermit thrushes, 1 Coopers hawk, 1 sharp-shinned hawk, 1 red-shouldered hawk, 3 ravens, and 1 immature golden eagle. A large black bear was seen climbing the side of the ridge.

Culver Lake: Tom Halliwell had about 50 common goldeneyes. He had a raven at Kittatinny Valley S.P. Budd Lake had a white-winged scoter, a red-breasted merganser, and a common loon.

Augusta: Mike Hiotis had a northern shrike along Rt 206 right at mile marker 113, south of Ross' Corner. He had a second shrike at Liberty Loop in the Wallkill River NWR.

Hackettstown: At the Alumni Field ponds, Tom Halliwell had a red-breasted nuthatch, 3 winter wrens, a hermit thrush, 2 killdeer, 2 gadwall and several green-winged teal.

Fredon: Tom Halliwell and Alan Boyd had 1-2 cackling geese in the pond at Waterwheel Farm on Fairview Hill Rd. An osprey is lingering at the back end of Lake Musconetcong.

Sunrise Mtn hawkwatch: Fred Weber had 2 golden eagles, 2 red-tails, 1 sharp-shinned, 3 snow buntings, 5 ravens, purple finches and bluebirds. Two red-necked grebes were on Culver Lake.

Liberty Loop: Tom Halliwell & Tom Sudol had 12+ black-bellied plovers, 3-4 pectoral sandpipers, 2 dunlin, 1-2 western sandpipers, 4-5 white-rumped sandpipers. The beaver pond on Unionville Rd had a short-billed dowitcher and many greater and lesser yellowlegs.

Blairstown: Dennis Briede & Alan Boyd did a Big Stay on Dennis' deck facing the Kittatinny ridge. Forty-seven species were noted including 2 displaying woodcock, 3 screech owls, 1 great horned owl, 678 robins, 65 bluebirds, 420 cedar waxwings, 1 hermit thrush, 7 purple finches, 4 pileated woodpeckers, 36 blue jays, 6 myrtle warblers, 1 fox sparrow, 1045 grackles, 1 killdeer, 24 ravens (with one flock of 19 moving south along the ridge), 1 merlin (which took a cedar waxwing out of the air), 7 Coopers hawks, 4 sharp-shinned hawks, 2 harriers, 1 osprey, 18 red-taileds, 1 kestrel.

Unionville Rd, Wantage: At a beaver pond Dennis Briede and Alan Boyd had 20 lesser yellowlegs, 2 greater yellowlegs and a woodcock. They had 2 white-winged scoters on Culver Lake later.

Liberty Loop: Ken Witkowski led a waterfowl walk. Highlights included 500+ American coots, 50+ northern shovellers, 100+ pintails, peregrine falcon, bald eagle, American wigeon, gadwall, ruddy ducks, 10-12 black-bellied plovers, 1-2 western sandpipers, 1 white-rumped sandpiper, 2 dunlin and 1 short-billed dowitcher.

Sunrise Mtn hawkwatch: Fred Weber had a juvenile rough-legged hawk, 3 red-tails and an adult bald eagle. On Culver Lake he had 60 buffleheads, a white-winged scoter and 2 female red-breasted mergansers.

Montague: Marianne Ofenloch had a Nashville warbler in her yard along with a sapsucker, both vultures, red-tails, cedar waxwings, bluebirds, juncos and a Carolina wren.

Blairstown: Alan Boyd and Dennis Briede did a Big Stay on Dennis' deck at the base of the Kittatinny ridge. Fifty-two species of birds were noted including: barred owl, screech owl, 45 myrtle warblers, 5 black-throated green warblers, 5 palm warblers, 1 Nashville warbler, 5 Coopers hawks, 2 sharp-shinned hawks, 1 bald eagle, 2 red-shouldered hawks, 2 kestrels, 61 cedar waxwings, house wren, yb sapsucker, 26 bluebirds, 1 Lincoln's sparrow, 64 chipping sparrows, blue-headed vireo, and 19 killdeer. A black bear and a coyote were also seen.

Kittatinny Valley State Park: Tom Halliwell had 20-25 American pipits in the plowed field adjacent to Twin Lakes. A Virginia rail was calling in the cattails. Also in the area were sharp-shinned & Cooper’s hawks, palm warblers, white-crowned & Lincoln’s sparrows.

Dennis Briede & Alan Boyd birded western Sussex County. They had 73 species including 10 kestrels in one group on Roy Rd in Wantage. Eight more were in a group on Quarry Rd, and 4 were on Rose Morrow Rd. Five common moorhens and a pied-billed grebe were at Lewisburg marsh. 300+ tree swallows were at Oil City Rd. Twelve species of warblers were seen during the day including black & white, c yellowthroat, black-throated blue, blackpoll, magnolia, myrtle, redstart, parula, pine, Nashville, & Wilson's. Also seen: Lincoln's sparrow, Swainson's thrush, bald eagle, juncos, white-throated sparrows, sapsucker, red-eyed & blue-headed vireos.

Montague: Donna Traylor had 2 kestrels, 6 flickers and a pileated woodpecker sharing two trees. In Wantage, 5 kestrels were on the Ricker farm and 2 more were on Quarry and Harden Rds. She still has a male hummingbird at her feeder in Frankford.

Fifty-five species were noted including 3 Indigo Buntings, 15 RT Hummingbirds, 1 Wood Thrush, 13 E Bluebirds, 2 C Yellowthroats, 2 Prairie Warblers, 1 B&W Warbler, 1 RE Vireo, 1 YT Vireo, 2 Pileated WP, 33 Cedar WW, 1 E Screech Owl, 2 Scarlet Tanagers, 1 E Kingbird, 11 Barn Swallows, 1 BW Hawk, 2 RS Hawks, 3 Coopers Hawks, 2 Bald Eagles, 4 Killdeer, 2 Ravens, 1 Baltimore Oriole, 14 Turkeys, 1 B Thrasher. Three bears were also seen.

Highlights: Parula, Hooded, Pine & Cerulean Warblers, Louisiana Waterthrush, Veery, Red-shouldered Hawk, Scarlet Tanager, Acadian Flycatcher, DC Cormorant, Wood Duck, Common Merganser, Osprey, Pileated Woodpecker. Two Black Bears were also observed.

Hyper Humus: 5 Horned Grebes, Pintail, Ring-necked Ducks, Am Wigeon, Shoveler. The Mt Arlington dump had Woodcock.

Marianne Ofenloch had a large flock of blackbirds on Warbasse Junction Rd. At the Wallkill NWR, she had 100's of Snow Geese, numerous Pintails and two Rough-legged Hawks. A juvenile Bald Eagle was near Bassetts Bridge Rd. Gardners Pond at KVSP had Bufflehead and Ring-necked Ducks. Lake Musconetcong had Buffleheads, Common Mergansers and Hooded Mergansers. Lake Hopatcong had Buffleheads.

Waterloo Rd area: Wade & Sharon Wander joined others to ‘escort’ over 500 salamanders across the road. The Wanders moved about 135 Spotted & 4 Jefferson’s Salamanders themselves, plus some Spring Peepers and an American Toad.

Blairstown: Dennis Briede & Alan Boyd did a Big Sit on Dennis' deck at the base of the Kittatinny Ridge. Thirty-one species were noted including 1 Woodcock (displaying), 20 Cardinals, 3 Pileated WP, 2 hairy WP, 1 Fox Sparrow, 220 Red-winged BB, 92 Robins, 5 Red-tailed hawks, 2 Red-shouldered Hawks, 5 Bald Eagles (4 adult & 1 immature), 2 Turkeys, 5 Common Ravens. Three Black Bears were seen in a tree on the mountainside.
